Middle School Curriculum

John Witherspoon offers a full set of learning experiences for children in grades six through eight.  Students participate in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies on a daily basis.  At the end of grade five or upon arrival at John Witherspoon, students select Spanish or French as a World Language and they study that language through their Middle School years.  Students also have an opportunity to enroll in Mandarin as an additional language starting in grade seven.  All students participate in physical education and health classes in a rotating schedule.  John Witherspoon offers a range of courses in an Exploratory Program that supports and enhances the core curriculum.  Through the Exploratory Programs, students participate in project-based activities in specialized classrooms.  They learn to apply critical reasoning, problem-solving, and thinking skills and strategies. A standard student daily schedule includes two periods for these subjects.  Courses are typically a semester in length.  Programs offered to students in grades sixth through eighth are:  3D Programming, Art, Band, Choir, Computers, Drama, Habits of Mind, Orchestra, Research & Debate and Tech Prep.  Students also have opportunity to participate in leadership activities and structured classes.
