Elementary Curriculum

Welcome to the grade level curriculum overview section of our website.

Students at the elementary level experience Language Arts and Mathematics every day.  Science and Social Studies time is utilized based on particular topics and projects.  This is often through daily instruction in both areas or alternating days based on the particular topics.  All students attend a Science Lab with the classroom teacher and the school's Science teacher on a weekly basis.  Students participate in "Specials" classes that include Physical Education, Health, Vocal Music, Art and Library.  These subjects are scheduled on a weekly basis.

Students also have the option to participate in our Instrumental Music program beginning in grade 3.  See the Music section below for details.

Princeton Public Schools has been a Model Program for World Language since 2002.  All students participate in Spanish lessons almost daily from grade 2 through grade 5.  The results of our approach to learning an additional language can be seen in our excellent AP scores at Princeton High School.

Focus Period
The Focus Period was created as part of the elementary schedule during the 2010-11 school year.  It provides a time for all students to actively engage in activities which support or challenge students’ identified strengths and needs.  The Focus Period takes place for all elementary students on a daily basis.  Students who participate in the Accelerated Intervention Services (AIS) Program typically are scheduled during the Focus period.

Integrated/Interdisciplinary work
Our curriculum is being aligned to the Common Core State Standards to allow for integration of technology throughout all content areas and interdisciplinary learning opportunities across all subjects.  In particular, students will experience interdisciplinary learning with literacy, Science and Social Studies.  Our Developmental Guidance program and Service Learning efforts are integrated throughout the school year through assemblies, special programs and small group learning.
